The average import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds stood at $117 per ton in 2022, surging by 35% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds increased by +70.9% against 2020 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($187 per ton), while the price for Lithuania ($39 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In October 2023, the average export price for peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds amounted to $268 per ton, increasing by 9.1% against the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 9.7% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $269 per ton in August 2023; however, from September 2023 to October 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Peru ($406 per ton), while the average price for exports to Qatar ($39.0 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds into the Netherlands fell to 1.8M tons in 2022, with a decrease of -8.5% against 2021. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.9M tons, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, imports of peat; (including peat litter), whether or not agglomerateds skyrocketed to $206M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In general, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% over the last three years.
