Price for Spices; Cardamoms, Crushed or Ground in the Netherlands (FOB) - 2023

The average export price for spices; cardamoms, crushed or ground stood at $18,125 per ton in July 2023, picking up by 64% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a modest increase from July 2022 to July 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +1.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on July 2023 figures, spices; cardamoms, crushed or ground export price increased by +64.0% against June 2023 indices. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $23,175 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Norway ($23,739 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($11,105 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average import price for spices; cardamoms, crushed or ground amounted to $13,878 per ton, dropping by -43.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $24,700 per ton in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($24,673 per ton), while the price for the United States ($1,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+29.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
