The average import price for spices; cloves (whole fruit, cloves and stems), neither crushed nor ground stood at $5,056 per ton in June 2023, jumping by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 60% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $5,960 per ton. From January 2023 to June 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Madagascar ($5,056 per ton) and Indonesia ($5,056 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($5,055 per ton) and Sri Lanka ($5,056 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
