In 2022, the average import price for spices; ginger, crushed or ground amounted to $6,788 per ton, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 165%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $6,902 per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($7,356 per ton), while the price for Tanzania ($1,388 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+26.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for spices; ginger, crushed or ground stood at $736 per ton in 2022, dropping by -33.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a dramatic curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 76%. The export price peaked at $44,713 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($2,223 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo ($167 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+313.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Spices; Ginger, Crushed or Ground in Uganda

In 2022, the amount of spices; ginger, crushed or ground imported into Uganda rose remarkably to 22 tons, growing by 6% on the year before. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, spices; ginger, crushed or ground imports expanded modestly to $152K in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
