The average import price for vanilla stood at $178K per ton in January 2024, rising by 111% against the previous month. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2023 when the average import price increased by 155% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $338K per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to January 2024, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Papua New Guinea ($610K per ton), while the price for Madagascar ($170K per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Papua New Guinea (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average export price for vanilla amounted to $142,660 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 204%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $416,288 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($248,550 per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($121,390 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+23.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of vanilla imported into Switzerland skyrocketed to 80 tons, increasing by 59% on 2021. In general, imports enjoyed significant growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of vanilla skyrocketed to $7.7M in 2022. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 1,694% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
