In August 2023, the average export price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms amounted to $4,441 per ton, rising by 7.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $4,571 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($5,607 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,189 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms stood at $5,518 per ton in 2022, growing by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms increased by +34.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 39%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($31,997 per ton), while the price for Finland ($2,298 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+5.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Stainless Steel; Flat-Rolled Products of Width Less than 600mm in Italy
In 2022, shipments abroad of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms decreased by -13.7% to 120K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 15%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 139K tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, exports of stainless steel; flat-rolled products of width less than 600mms skyrocketed to $574M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +16.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
