The average export price for steel, alloy stood at $610 per ton in December 2023, dropping by -3.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 an increase of 9.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $697 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Saudi Arabia ($651 per ton) and India ($644 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($545 per ton) and Thailand ($554 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From February 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for steel, alloy amounted to $943 per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for steel, alloy increased by +29.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,351 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($896 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of steel, alloy from China fell notably to 1.4M tons in 2022, dropping by -81.3% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports faced a sharp decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 29%.
In value terms, exports of steel, alloy shrank rapidly to $1.1B in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a precipitous shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $5.3B, and then reduced notably in the following year.
