In September 2023, the average export price for steel, alloy amounted to $825 per ton, remaining constant against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 17% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $1,037 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to September 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In September 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices to Romania ($1,014 per ton) and the Czech Republic ($923 per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($809 per ton) and Italy ($809 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average import price for steel, alloy amounted to $1,038 per ton, reducing by -2.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for steel, alloy increased by +38.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 47%. The import price peaked at $1,472 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($1,326 per ton), while the price for Hungary ($802 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Romania (+29.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of steel, alloy, when their volume decreased by -33% to 150K tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 105%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 224K tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, exports of steel, alloy plummeted to $161M in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 271%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $238M, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, the amount of steel, alloy imported into Slovakia contracted sharply to 16K tons, reducing by -38.9% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 240% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 26K tons, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy fell significantly to $17M in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 383% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $28M, and then declined markedly in the following year.
