The average import price for steel, alloy stood at $3,648 per ton in December 2023, growing by 2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in August 2023 when the average import price increased by 11% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,350 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to December 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($4,897 per ton), while the price for China ($1,358 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

In December 2023, the average export price for steel, alloy amounted to $3,147 per ton, which is down by -26.6% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated temperate growth from February 2023 to December 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.4% over the last ten months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2023 figures, export price for steel, alloy decreased by -29.6% against October 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 59% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4,467 per ton in October 2023; however, from November 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($4,472 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($710 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From February 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of steel, alloy decreased by -44.9% to 14K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 157% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 25K tons, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy reduced to $48M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 179%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $55M, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, exports of steel, alloy soared to $28M in 2022. Overall, exports showed a slight increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
