In January 2024, the average import price for steel, stainless amounted to $4,057 per ton, reducing by -19.8% against the previous month. In general, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in September 2023 an increase of 171% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $5,748 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Japan ($9,795 per ton), while the price for China ($3,895 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+6.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average export price for steel, stainless stood at $9,136 per ton in 2022, jumping by 301% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $11,945 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Solomon Islands ($13,787 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cote d'Ivoire ($5,905 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cote d'Ivoire (+73.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
