In December 2023, the average export price for steel, stainless amounted to $2,757 per ton, rising by 7% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $4,887 per ton in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($3,981 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($1,519 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2023 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+1.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, the average import price for steel, stainless amounted to $16,941 per ton, rising by 79% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed prominent growth. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($66,617 per ton), while the price for India ($4,751 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports of Steel, Stainless; Angles, Shapes and Sections in China
In 2022, approx. 35K tons of steel, stainless were exported from China; reducing by -4% compared with the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 37K tons, and then declined in the following year.
In value terms, exports of steel, stainless expanded slightly to $136M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 102%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

For the third consecutive year, China recorded decline in purchases abroad of steel, stainless, which decreased by -50.6% to 474 tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a sharp slump. The smallest decline of -5.9% was in 2021.
In value terms, imports of steel, stainless declined to $8M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt descent. The smallest decline of -1.9% was in 2021.
