The average import price for steel, stainless stood at $4,428 per ton in 2022, rising by 7.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $5,459 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($11,395 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,342 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+14.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for steel, stainless stood at $20,515 per ton in December 2023, growing by 23% against the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a noticeable increase from December 2022 to December 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2023 figures, export price for steel, stainless increased by +2.8% against September 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2023 when the average export price increased by 223% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in December 2023.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Spain ($31,470 per ton), while the average price for exports to France amounted to $17,975 per ton.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+13.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Steel, Stainless; Angles, Shapes and Sections in Portugal
For the fourth consecutive year, Portugal recorded growth in overseas purchases of steel, stainless, which increased by 5.4% to 1.6K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +10.4% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
In value terms, imports of steel, stainless rose sharply to $7M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +17.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +60.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
