The average import price for steel, stainless stood at $6,068 per ton in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $6,127 per ton, leveling off in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($9,490 per ton), while the price for India ($3,742 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for steel, stainless amounted to $8,652 per ton, surging by 20% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, export price for steel, stainless increased by +48.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($23,437 per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($6,347 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Libya (+28.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of steel, stainless decreased by -19.4% to 282 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports saw a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 1.3%. As a result, imports reached the peak of 392 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, imports of steel, stainless dropped sharply to $1.7M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.1M, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 146 tons, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, exports of steel, stainless soared to $1.2M in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
