In 2022, the average import price for steel, stainless; semi-finished products, other than of rectangular cross-sectia amounted to $8,448 per ton, dropping by -40.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 an increase of 256%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $19,304 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($88,500 per ton), while the price for India ($1,503 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+19.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. 330 kg of steel, stainless; semi-finished products, other than of rectangular cross-sectia were imported into Bangladesh; remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 332 kg, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, imports of steel, stainless; semi-finished products, other than of rectangular cross-sectia contracted dramatically to $2.8K in 2022. Overall, imports showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 24%.
