In June 2023, the average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price amounted to $9,587 per ton, standing approximately at the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 29% month-to-month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $11,959 per ton. From December 2022 to June 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Zimbabwe ($9,813 per ton) and Zambia ($9,103 per ton), while the price for Malawi ($6,692 per ton) and Tanzania ($7,630 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse export price stood at $2,960 per ton in June 2023, with an increase of 28% against the previous month. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 38% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $3,304 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to June 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($4,729 per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($457 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (+13.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse imports into China rose sharply to 161K tons in 2022, increasing by 8.8% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated a slight increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +82.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse imports surged to $1.3B in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +74.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 50% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
