In February 2023, the average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price amounted to $1,793 per ton, growing by 711% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $6,284 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($9,436 per ton), while the price for Afghanistan ($227 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+27.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
