The average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse export price stood at $8,239 per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($11,249 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($4,450 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In August 2023, the average tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price amounted to $6,470 per ton, growing by 34% against the previous month. In general, import price indicated a noticeable increase from August 2022 to August 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.0% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on August 2023 figures, tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse import price decreased by -5.6% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 50% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $6,851 per ton in June 2023; however, from July 2023 to August 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($13,415 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($638 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Dominican Republic (+6.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse exports from the United States contracted to 105K tons in 2022, approximately mirroring the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 8.3%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 105K tons, leveling off in the following year.
In value terms, tobacco, unmanufactured; tobacco refuse exports stood at $864M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
