In December 2023, the average import price for tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid amounted to $1,267 per ton, rising by 7.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2023 an increase of 55% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $1,483 per ton. From November 2023 to December 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($2,584 per ton), while the price for Singapore ($344 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+8.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid stood at $1,102 per ton in December 2023, waning by -4.4% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 when the average export price increased by 35% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $1,420 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to December 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Mali ($1,277 per ton) and Burkina Faso ($1,128 per ton), while the average price for exports to Niger ($1,019 per ton) and Togo ($1,023 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burkina Faso (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Tomatoes; Prepared or Preserved Otherwise than by Vinegar or Acetic Acid in Ghana
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid, when their volume decreased by -1.4% to 63K tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 2.8% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 64K tons, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, imports of tomatoes; prepared or preserved otherwise than by vinegar or acetic acid declined to $50M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $52M, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
