In 2022, the average import price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses amounted to $789 per ton, rising by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 40%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Honduras ($1,479 per ton), while the price for Canada ($549 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+5.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2023, the average export price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses amounted to $783 per ton, stabilizing at the previous month. Overall, export price indicated a perceptible increase from December 2022 to December 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2023 figures, export price for waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses decreased by -9.2% against October 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2023 an increase of 66% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $863 per ton. From November 2023 to December 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($6,638 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($290 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+28.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Waste, Parings and Scrap, of Plastics in the United States
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses, when their volume decreased by -7.5% to 432K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 467K tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, imports of waste, parings and scrap, of plasticses reached $341M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 61%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
