In December 2021, the average export price for wood amounted to $38.0 per cubic meter, picking up by 25% against the previous month. Over the period from January 2021 to December 2021, it increased at an average monthly rate of +4.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2021 an increase of 31% month-to-month. The export price peaked in December 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Italy ($48.7 per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Spain ($31.8 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In December 2021, the average import price for wood amounted to $9.8 per cubic meter, picking up by 7.7% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2021 when the average import price increased by 54% against the previous month. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $13.0 per cubic meter. From April 2021 to December 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($38.0 per cubic meter), while the price for Spain ($7.7 per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+1.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Exports of Wood; for Fuel, Sawdust and Wood Waste and Scrap, Not Agglomerated in Portugal

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of wood, when their volume decreased by -13.3% to 592K cubic meters. In general, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +51.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 683K cubic meters, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, exports of wood contracted notably to $14M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 131%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $19M, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of wood decreased by -18.3% to 302K cubic meters in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 169%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at 370K cubic meters in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, imports of wood plummeted to $3.1M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 131%. Over the period under review, imports of reached the peak figure at $3.7M in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.
