Price for Wool, Not Carded or Combed in India (CIF) - 2023
The average import price for wool, not carded or combed stood at $2,917 per ton in July 2023, dropping by -3.2% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 when the average import price increased by 69% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,815 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($9,550 per ton), while the price for Greece ($369 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for wool, not carded or combed stood at $3,045 per ton in 2022, growing by 158% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 166% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $4,404 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($9,792 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($896 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+18.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Wool, Not Carded or Combed in India
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of wool, not carded or combed, when their volume decreased by -17.6% to 85K tons. Overall, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +27.4% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 103K tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, wool, not carded or combed imports soared to $241M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated mild growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
