Price for Zinc; Dust, Powders and Flakes in Japan (CIF) - 2023

The average import price for zinc; dust, powders and flakeses stood at $3,281 per ton in July 2023, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 when the average import price increased by 6.1% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,384 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Norway ($4,134 per ton), while the price for South Korea ($3,150 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-1.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.

The average export price for zinc; dust, powders and flakeses stood at $3,555 per ton in July 2023, waning by -2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 an increase of 3.9% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $4,777 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($6,739 per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($565 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+2.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports of Zinc; Dust, Powders and Flakes in Japan

For the fourth consecutive year, Japan recorded growth in overseas purchases of zinc; dust, powders and flakeses, which increased by 0.6% to 7.7K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, zinc; dust, powders and flakes imports surged to $32M in 2022. Overall, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
