In 2021, the average zinc; waste and scrap import price amounted to $1,882 per ton, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, zinc; waste and scrap import price decreased by -25.1% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $2,513 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($2,547 per ton), while the price for Bulgaria stood at $1,520 per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+3.9%).

In July 2023, the average zinc; waste and scrap export price amounted to $2,202 per ton, rising by 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average export price increased by 169% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $3,135 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major external markets. In July 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Slovakia ($3,116 per ton) and Luxembourg ($3,115 per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($2,098 per ton) and Belgium ($2,178 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+0.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Zinc; Waste and Scrap in Romania

In 2022, imports of zinc; waste and scraps into Romania reduced markedly to 1.2K tons, with a decrease of -25.4% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.6K tons, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, zinc; waste and scrap imports skyrocketed to $3.8M in 2022.
