Mango and Mangosteen Production in Malawi - 2022
In 2022, the amount of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas produced in Malawi declined modestly to 2M tons, flattening at 2021 figures. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 28%. Mango and mangosteen production peaked at 2.1M tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure. Mango and mangosteen output in Malawi indicated a resilient increase, which was largely conditioned by resilient growth of the harvested area and a slight expansion in yield figures.
In value terms, mango and mangosteen production declined to $6.9B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 39%. Mango and mangosteen production peaked at $7.5B in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In 2022, the harvested area of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Malawi shrank modestly to 70K ha, which is down by -3.7% compared with 2021. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to mango and mangosteen production reached the peak figure at 73K ha in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

The average yield of mangoes, mangosteens and guavas in Malawi totaled 28 tons per ha in 2022, growing by 2.5% on the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The mango and mangosteen yield peaked at 33 tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure.
