Onion Production in Azerbaijan - 2022
After five years of growth, production of onions (dry) decreased by -3.9% to 275K tons in 2022. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the period from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at 286K tons in 2021, and then fell modestly in the following year. Onion output in Azerbaijan indicated resilient growth, which was largely conditioned by a prominent expansion of the harvested area and buoyant growth in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production dropped slightly to $76M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2017 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $81M. From 2020 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Onion Harvested Area in Azerbaijan - 2022
In 2022, the onion harvested area in Azerbaijan reduced to 10K ha, which is down by -12.2% against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 2.7%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of 13K ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the onion harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Onion Yield in Azerbaijan - 2022
In 2022, the average yield of onions (dry) in Azerbaijan expanded markedly to 27 tons per ha, growing by 9.5% against 2021 figures. Overall, the yield indicated a prominent increase from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +9.9% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion yield increased by +60.5% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average onion yield attained the maximum level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
