Onion Production in Bangladesh - 2022

In 2022, approx. 2.5M tons of onions (dry) were produced in Bangladesh; surging by 11% on the previous year's figure. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the period from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak volume in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term. Onion output in Bangladesh indicated a strong increase, which was largely conditioned by resilient growth of the harvested area and a perceptible increase in yield figures.

From 2020 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of onions (dry) production in Bangladesh stood at 205K ha, with an increase of 5.7% on 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 7.4% against the previous year. The onion harvested area peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Onion Yield in Bangladesh - 2022

The average yield of onions (dry) in Bangladesh expanded modestly to 12 tons per ha in 2022, growing by 4.9% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average onion yield attained the maximum level in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
