For the third year in a row, Cameroon recorded growth in production of onions (dry), which increased by 10% to 387K tons in 2022. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 13%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum volume in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future. Onion output in Cameroon indicated a perceptible increase, which was largely conditioned by a moderate increase of the harvested area and a mild setback in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production reduced modestly to $111M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11%. Onion production peaked at $507M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of onions (dry) production in Cameroon skyrocketed to 39K ha, picking up by 28% compared with the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Onion Yield in Cameroon - 2022
The average yield of onions (dry) in Cameroon declined to 9.9 tons per ha in 2022, falling by -13.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield saw a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 16%. The onion yield peaked at 11 tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
