In 2022, approx. 25M tons of onions (dry) were produced in China; leveling off at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 1.4%. Onion production peaked at 25M tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Onion output in China indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production declined to $15B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The onion harvested area peaked at 1.1M ha in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
Onion Yield in China - 2022
In 2022, the average yield of onions (dry) in China rose to 22 tons per ha, growing by 1.5% against the year before. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The onion yield peaked at 22 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure.
