In 2022, production of onions (dry) increased by 4.6% to 46K tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, the total production indicated tangible growth from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +64.4% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Onion production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future. Onion output in Costa Rica indicated perceptible growth, which was largely conditioned by a moderate increase of the harvested area and tangible growth in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production declined to $17M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 152% against the previous year. Onion production peaked at $18M in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In 2022, approx. 1.3K ha of onions (dry) were harvested in Costa Rica; reducing by -18.9% against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 11%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion production reached the peak figure at 1.6K ha in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, the average yield of onions (dry) in Costa Rica skyrocketed to 36 tons per ha, increasing by 29% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield indicated moderate growth from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion yield increased by +65.7% against 2019 indices. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
