After two years of decline, production of onions (dry) increased by 44% to 18K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a deep reduction. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum volume at 28K tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure. Onion output in Ecuador indicated a deep setback, which was largely conditioned by a deep reduction of the harvested area and a buoyant expansion in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production skyrocketed to $4.3M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $7.4M in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 10%. The onion harvested area peaked at 13K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
