After five years of growth, production of onions (dry) decreased by -11.6% to 782K tons in 2022. Overall, the total production indicated prominent growth from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +70.3% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Onion production peaked at 884K tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year. Onion output in France indicated buoyant growth, which was largely conditioned by a remarkable increase of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production shrank markedly to $679M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 122%. Onion production peaked at $881M in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
Onion Harvested Area in France - 2022
In 2022, approx. 21K ha of onions (dry) were harvested in France; declining by -8.6% on the year before. Over the period under review, the total harvested area indicated a resilient increase from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +11.6% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion harvested area increased by +73.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 23%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion production reached the peak figure at 23K ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Onion Yield in France - 2022
In 2022, the average onion yield in France fell modestly to 37 tons per ha, declining by -3.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the yield increased by 24%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 42 tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the average onion yield failed to regain momentum.
