For the third consecutive year, Ghana recorded growth in production of onions (dry), which increased by 0.8% to 151K tons in 2022. Overall, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 2.8% against the previous year. Onion production peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term. Onion output in Ghana indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production surged to $52M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. In 2022, approx. 8.3K ha of onions (dry) were harvested in Ghana; therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 1.4%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of 8.3K ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Onion Yield in Ghana - 2022
The average yield of onions (dry) in Ghana amounted to 18 tons per ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 3.5%. Over the period under review, the average onion yield hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
