In 2022, approx. 32M tons of onions (dry) were produced in India; growing by 19% against the year before. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the period from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, production attained the peak volume and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Onion output in India indicated a buoyant increase, which was largely conditioned by a prominent increase of the harvested area and a slight reduction in yield figures.

In 2022, approx. 1.9M ha of onions (dry) were harvested in India; growing by 20% against the previous year. In general, the total harvested area indicated a prominent expansion from 2017 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, onion harvested area increased by +59.1% against 2019 indices. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Onion Yield in India - 2022
The average yield of onions (dry) in India dropped to 16 tons per ha in 2022, leveling off at the year before. Overall, the yield showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 5.4%.
