In 2022, production of onions (dry) increased by 0.8% to 15K tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, the total production indicated buoyant growth from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +62.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Onion production peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come. Onion output in Oman indicated a buoyant increase, which was largely conditioned by a buoyant increase of the harvested area and prominent growth in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production fell slightly to $4.8M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated temperate growth from 2017 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last five years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +48.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 49% against the previous year. Onion production peaked at $4.8M in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Onion Harvested Area in Oman - 2022
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of onions (dry) production in Oman contracted slightly to 461 ha, waning by -2.7% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 25%. The onion harvested area peaked at 586 ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.
Onion Yield in Oman - 2022
The average yield of onions (dry) in Oman expanded slightly to 32 tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 3.7% on the previous year. Overall, the yield saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 131% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of 38 tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the average onion yield remained at a lower figure.
