After two years of growth, production of onions (dry) decreased by -10.6% to 2.1M tons in 2022. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 16%. Onion production peaked at 2.3M tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Onion output in Pakistan indicated a noticeable expansion, which was largely conditioned by a perceptible expansion of the harvested area and a temperate increase in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production rose markedly to $801M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $866M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, the onion harvested area in Pakistan shrank to 141K ha, waning by -8.4% on the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion production attained the peak figure at 154K ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, the average onion yield in Pakistan reduced to 15 tons per ha, shrinking by -2.3% compared with 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the yield increased by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average onion yield attained the peak level at 15 tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.
