In 2022, production of onions (dry) decreased by -6% to 2.4M tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total output volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 14%. Onion production peaked at 2.5M tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year. Onion output in Turkey indicated a mild expansion, which was largely conditioned by mild growth of the harvested area and a noticeable increase in yield figures.
In value terms, onion production expanded rapidly to $470M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, the total production indicated strong growth from 2017 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -11.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 59%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $531M in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Onion Harvested Area in Turkey - 2022
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of onions (dry) production in Turkey fell markedly to 58K ha, dropping by -17.6% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to onion production reached the peak figure at 70K ha in 2021, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Onion Yield in Turkey - 2022
The average yield of onions (dry) in Turkey expanded remarkably to 41 tons per ha in 2022, growing by 14% compared with the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. As a result, the yield reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
