Onion Production in Vietnam - 2022

After two years of growth, production of onions (dry) decreased by -0.4% to 353K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1.9%. As a result, production attained the peak volume of 358K tons. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum. Onion output in Vietnam indicated a relatively flat trend pattern, which was largely conditioned by a relatively flat trend pattern of the harvested area and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

In value terms, onion production dropped slightly to $181M in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $188M in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Onion Harvested Area in Vietnam - 2022

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of onions (dry) production in Vietnam shrank to 98K ha, approximately mirroring the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 1%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of 99K ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the onion harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Onion Yield in Vietnam - 2022

The average yield of onions (dry) in Vietnam shrank slightly to 3.6 tons per ha in 2022, approximately reflecting the year before. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 0.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 3.6 tons per ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
