Plantain Production in Costa Rica - 2022
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in production of plantains, when its volume decreased by -4.8% to 89K tons. In general, production continues to indicate a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 26%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak volume at 110K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Plantain output in Costa Rica indicated a pronounced descent, which was largely conditioned by a pronounced downturn of the harvested area and a mild expansion in yield figures.
In value terms, plantain production amounted to $34M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Plantain production peaked at $43M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Plantain Harvested Area in Costa Rica - 2022
In 2022, approx. 7.5K ha of plantains were harvested in Costa Rica; with a decrease of -5.8% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 13%. The plantain harvested area peaked at 10K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Plantain Yield in Costa Rica - 2022
The average yield of plantains in Costa Rica stood at 12 tons per ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the yield increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average plantain yield attained the peak level at 12 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.
