In 2022, production of plums and sloes increased by 16% to 115K tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, the total production indicated a resilient expansion from 2017 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the last five-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +84.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. Plum and sloe production peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come. Plum and sloe output in South Africa indicated a resilient expansion, which was largely conditioned by a prominent increase of the harvested area and buoyant growth in yield figures.
In value terms, plum and sloe production declined modestly to $78M in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 3.3%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $100M. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.
