Safflower Seed Production in India - 2022
Safflower seed production in India rose significantly to 39K tons in 2022, growing by 14% on 2021. Overall, production, however, faced a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 77%. Safflower seed production peaked at 94K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Safflower seed output in India indicated a deep setback, which was largely conditioned by a deep reduction of the harvested area and a measured expansion in yield figures.
In value terms, safflower seed production rose rapidly to $26M in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 48%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $57M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The safflower seed harvested area in India stood at 50K ha in 2022, surging by 3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to safflower seed production reached the peak figure at 144K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of safflower seed in India expanded significantly to 773 kg per ha in 2022, surging by 11% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2017 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of 843 kg per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the average safflower seed yield failed to regain momentum.
