Taro (Cocoyam) Production in Rwanda - 2022
In 2022, taro (cocoyam) production in Rwanda was estimated at 184K tons, increasing by 2.3% compared with the previous year. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 9.5% against the previous year. Taro (cocoyam) production peaked at 215K tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum. Taro (cocoyam) output in Rwanda indicated a pronounced setback, which was largely conditioned by a perceptible slump of the harvested area and modest growth in yield figures.
In value terms, taro (cocoyam) production rose slightly to $214M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 10%. Over the period under review, (cocoyam) production hit record highs at $236M in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the harvested area of taro in Rwanda was estimated at 29K ha, stabilizing at 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 3%. The taro (cocoyam) harvested area peaked at 35K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of taro in Rwanda reached 6.4 tons per ha in 2022, growing by 1.5% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2017 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average taro (cocoyam) yield hit record highs at 6.5 tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum.
