Pulses Price in Sri Lanka (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average pulses import price amounted to $910 per ton, rising by 37% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pulses import price increased by +87.7% against 2018 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($1,171 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($672 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+4.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average pulses export price stood at $1,129 per ton in 2022, increasing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($2,357 per ton), while the average price for exports to Pakistan ($740 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Pulses Imports in Sri Lanka
For the third consecutive year, Sri Lanka recorded decline in overseas purchases of pulses, which decreased by -24.6% to 187K tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt downturn. The smallest decline of -0.9% was in 2020.
In value terms, pulses imports expanded to $170M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +7.6% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Pulses Exports in Sri Lanka
In 2022, shipments abroad of pulses decreased by -61.9% to 1.5K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports faced a dramatic slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 608%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 30K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, pulses exports dropped significantly to $1.7M in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 656% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $22M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
