Pumpkin Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average pumpkin import price stood at $793 per ton in July 2023, waning by -14.2% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 an increase of 22% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,203 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to July 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($1,044 per ton), while the price for Mexico stood at $781 per ton.
From November 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+30.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
Pumpkin Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
The average pumpkin export price stood at $1,183 per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 55%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,456 per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,488 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($543 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Pumpkin Imports in Japan
In 2022, approx. 84K tons of pumpkin (squash and gourds) were imported into Japan; which is down by -8.9% against the year before. Overall, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 0.8% against the previous year.
In value terms, pumpkin imports dropped to $68M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 5.1%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $78M, and then fell in the following year.

Pumpkin Exports in Japan
For the fourth consecutive year, Japan recorded growth in shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds), which increased by 22% to 1K tons in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 73%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, pumpkin exports surged to $1.2M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +18.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +64.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 43%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
