In value terms, pyrites production reduced to $144M in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $241M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (141K tons), Iran (78K tons) and Turkey (52K tons), together comprising 77% of global production. Malaysia, Italy, the Philippines and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Imports
World Imports of Pyrites
In 2022, supplies from abroad of pyrites increased by 14% to 636K tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 1.2M tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, pyrites imports rose significantly to $101M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 216%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $296M. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports By Country
China represented the major importing country with an import of around 348K tons, which recorded 55% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Canada (196K tons), making up a 31% share of total imports. Italy (18K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Canada (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, China ($70M) constitutes the largest market for imported pyrites worldwide, comprising 69% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($3.6M), with a 3.6% share of global imports.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 214%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $396 per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($200 per ton), while Canada ($4.6 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 101%. The global exports peaked at 256K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, pyrites exports skyrocketed to $59M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 60%. The global exports peaked at $73M in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports By Country
Iran (75K tons) and Turkey (51K tons) represented roughly 55% of total exports in 2022. China (19K tons) held an 8.5% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (8.1%), Italy (7.3%) and Russia (6.9%). Taiwan (Chinese) (7.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +104.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest pyrites supplying countries worldwide were Iran ($15M), Italy ($8.6M) and Turkey ($6.1M), with a combined 51% share of global exports.
Turkey, with a CAGR of +101.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices By Country
The average pyrites export price stood at $258 per ton in 2022, surging by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 50% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $329 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($512 per ton), while Turkey ($121 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
