Raw Silk Price in Hong Kong SAR (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average raw silk export price amounted to $57,969 per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 67%. The export price peaked at $73,947 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($97,528 per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($50,912 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average raw silk import price amounted to $44,577 per ton, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 61% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $55,312 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($228,308 per ton), while the price for the United States ($19,284 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+19.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Raw Silk Exports in Hong Kong SAR
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of raw silk, when their volume decreased by -23.1% to 3.3 tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 4.3 tons, and then shrank notably in the following year.
In value terms, raw silk exports reduced remarkably to $193K in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 86%.
