View PricingRecommended Sugar Intake for Adults
In general, it is recommended that adults limit their sugar intake to no more than 50 grams (or about 12.5 teaspoons) per day. This recommendation includes both naturally occurring sugars and added sugars.
Naturally occurring sugars are found in fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. These sugars are accompanied by beneficial nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them a healthier choice. Added sugars, on the other hand, refer to sugars that are added to foods and drinks during processing or preparation. These sugars provide empty calories and little to no nutritional value.
The American Heart Association (AHA) provides specific guidelines on sugar intake for adults. They recommend that women consume no more than 6 teaspoons (25 grams) of added sugars per day, while men should limit their intake to no more than 9 teaspoons (38 grams) per day.
Excessive sugar consumption has been linked to numerous health issues, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and tooth decay. Consuming too much sugar can lead to weight gain as it provides excess calories without providing a feeling of fullness. It can also contribute to insulin resistance, a condition where the body becomes less responsive to the hormone insulin, leading to high blood sugar levels and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
High sugar intake has also been associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Diets high in added sugars can raise blood pressure, triglyceride levels, and LDL cholesterol levels, all of which are risk factors for heart disease. Furthermore, excessive sugar intake can negatively impact dental health by contributing to tooth decay and cavities.
In addition to these health risks, consuming too much sugar can also have detrimental effects on overall diet quality. Foods and drinks that are high in added sugars are often low in essential nutrients and can displace healthier food choices. This can result in a diet lacking in important vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
To reduce sugar intake, it is important to read food labels and look out for ingredients that indicate added sugars, such as sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, and fruit juice concentrates. Be mindful of sugar-sweetened beverages, such as soda, energy drinks, and sweetened teas, which can be a major source of added sugars. Instead, choose water, unsweetened tea, or fruit-infused water as healthier alternatives.
Incorporating more whole, unprocessed foods into the diet can also help reduce sugar intake. Choose fresh fruits as a natural source of sweetness and opt for plain yogurt instead of flavored varieties, which tend to be high in added sugars. Cooking at home allows you to have more control over the amount of sugar added to your meals and snacks.
Ultimately, it is important to be mindful of your sugar intake and make conscious choices to limit added sugars in your diet. A balanced diet that is low in added sugars can contribute to better overall health and well-being.

This year, world sugar production is expected to rise by 3% to 193M tons. The growth will be encouraged by favorable weather conditions in most of the largest producing countries, as well as the providing exemptions on the neonicotinoid usage against plant diseases and blights in France, Germany and the UK. The drop in sugar production and shipments from Brazil will be offset by large volumes coming from Thailand, which will boost global exports by +2.6% y-o-y. The increased supply in the world market is to keep sugar prices relatively stable over the next two years.
