Refined Palm Oil Price in Costa Rica (FOB) - 2021
In March 2020, the average refined palm oil export price amounted to $794 per ton, waning by -8.2% against the previous month. Over the last two-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +9.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2020 when the average export price increased by 32% month-to-month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $865 per ton, and then dropped in the following month.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In March 2020, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($902 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($691 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2020 to March 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mexico (+12.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Refined Palm Oil Price in Costa Rica (CIF) - 2021
The average refined palm oil import price stood at $1,116 per ton in March 2020, leveling off at the previous month. Over the period from January 2020 to March 2020, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2020 an increase of 6.7% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,129 per ton, and then dropped modestly in the following month.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Guatemala.
From January 2020 to March 2020, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Guatemala amounted to +1.4% per month.
Refined Palm Oil Exports in Costa Rica
After three years of growth, overseas shipments of refined palm oil decreased by -1.4% to 24K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11%.
In value terms, refined palm oil exports dropped sharply to $23M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 70%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $29M, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Refined Palm Oil Imports in Costa Rica
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of refined palm oil, when their volume decreased by -8% to 1.8K tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.4% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 22%.
In value terms, refined palm oil imports shrank dramatically to $2.3M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.8M, and then declined notably in the following year.
