Refined Soybean Oil Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022
In 2022, the average refined soybean oil import price amounted to $1,606 per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 61%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($3,626 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($1,470 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+10.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Refined Soybean Oil Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023
In July 2023, the average refined soybean oil export price amounted to $1,544 per ton, approximately reflecting the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2023 an increase of 11% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $2,082 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($3,863 per ton), while the average price for exports to Zimbabwe ($1,403 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Namibia (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Refined Soybean Oil Imports in South Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of refined soybean oil and its fractions decreased by -61.9% to 31K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports faced a sharp descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 81% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 125K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, refined soybean oil imports declined sharply to $50M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 95%.

In value terms, refined soybean oil exports fell to $21M in 2022.
