Rice Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
In July 2023, the average rice import price amounted to $1,259 per ton, increasing by 55% against the previous month. Overall, the import price saw moderate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 172% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,510 per ton. From June 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was the United States ($1,809 per ton), while the price for Thailand ($575 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+4.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Rice Price in Japan (FOB) - 2023
The average rice export price stood at $1,736 per ton in July 2023, flattening at the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when the average export price increased by 81% against the previous month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $1,975 per ton. From April 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($2,273 per ton), while the average price for exports to Switzerland ($1,213 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+0.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Rice Imports in Japan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of rice was finally on the rise to reach 669K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
In value terms, rice imports skyrocketed to $666M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +10.8% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Rice Exports in Japan
In 2022, rice exports from Japan fell sharply to 31K tons, dropping by -41.6% compared with the year before. In general, exports faced a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 11% against the previous year.
In value terms, rice exports reduced dramatically to $57M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $70M, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
