Rice Price in Norway (CIF) - 2023

In September 2023, the average rice import price amounted to $1,126 per ton, dropping by -26.3% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in October 2022 an increase of 45% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $1,674 per ton in July 2023; however, from August 2023 to September 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Spain ($5,414 per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($576 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Price in Norway (FOB) - 2022

The average rice export price stood at $2,418 per ton in 2022, shrinking by -7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 146% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,610 per ton, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($2,927 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vietnam ($776 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rice Imports in Norway

In 2022, the amount of rice imported into Norway surged to 30K tons, rising by 18% against the year before. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 21%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 32K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rice imports soared to $44M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Rice Exports in Norway

In 2022, rice exports from Norway declined to 151 tons, which is down by -13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, exports saw a dramatic shrinkage. The smallest decline of -12.9% was in 2020.

In value terms, rice exports declined remarkably to $365K in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $454K, and then fell markedly in the following year.
